Gnocchi on the 29th of the month

It's April 29 today and I can picture many families will be sitting down to eat a big, tasty meal of gnocchi with some money under their plates.

In my childhood in Argentina, this scene would not be complete if I don't include my grandma, daughter of an Italian immigrant cooking her speciality: tuco, tomato sauce seasoned with lots of oregano and bay leaves, which she would cook for hours and let us, grandchildren, dip a not so small slice of homemade bread.

This tradition travelled from Italy with the immigrants that settled in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay in the 19th century.

The origin of this tradition is not clear, but it seems to go back to the story of Saint Pantaleon in the 8th century in Northeast Italy, where the young doctor was preaching and healing the sick.

The best part of learning Spanish is learning these fun, interesting aspects of the varied cultures of the Hispanic countries. So next 29th don't miss the chance of enjoying a yummy plate of ñoqui.
